Why Act Now
“Ain’t nobody making any more land!”
In fact, the national land base is shrinking as soil is covered up by highways, factories, houses, businesses, and reservoirs. The price of raw land is escalating at an astounding rate. The statistics on the rate of conversion of land—even arable land—to irreversible uses should cause us to demand a careful look at the consequences. Admirable soil conservation practices don’t stop farmland losses. Historic structures give way to ‘progress’. Protection of wetlands is eroding in spite of well intentioned regulatory efforts. Sum these pointers and ask yourself, “Is the quality of my life better than it was … (pick some time in the past)? Is the trend toward a higher quality of life in the future?” Why act now to preserve and protect lands? Because we must!
